Student Computer Resources

Computer Resources at UMKC

The Information Services (IS) department provides computer resources to all currently enrolled, fee-paying UMKC students.  These resources include but are not limited to:

IS Computer Accounts

Many of the resources provided by IS are tied to powerful computers called servers.  Servers are used to provide a central storage space for data.  By using a central repository for data, you can access your data from many locations both on and off campus.

Students are given storage space on these servers, but to access your data, you will need to set up an account.  You wouldn't want just anyone to be able to access your data!  IS refers to these accounts as "SSO Accounts."  Your SSO account has most likely already been created.  What you need to do is activate your account.

Activating your SSO Account

Activating your account will provide you with a username and password.  Detailed instructions for activating your account are found in this document: Activating Your Account.

There are two ways you can activate your account:

If you have trouble activating your account, please go to the Account Activation Troubleshooting page.

Behind the Scenes

Once you have activated your account, the servers must prepare your account for use.  This procedure can take up to 24 hours.  In the meantime, you can still access the computers in IS-managed computer labs and you will have access to your email account.  If you work in the computer labs during this 24 hour period, you will need to have a disk with you to store any data you wish to save.

After 24 hours, your account will be fully activated.  Fully activated accounts provide access to:

It's always a good idea to activate your account early so that all of these computer resources are available to you when you need them!

Web Page Information

We have provided these web pages to make sure you have access to all the information you'll need to get started with your account.  The web pages have been designed to inform and instruct you about the computer resources you'll be able to use once your account is fully activated.

Please read through the rest of this web page in its entirety for information about the various services.  You will have the opportunity to follow links to these other helpful and informative pages as well:

Data Lockers

All UMKC students with fully activated Exchange accounts are granted space on the central servers maintained by the Information Services (IS) department.  You can think of the central servers as a storage facility where each incoming student gets several "lockers" assigned to a particular type of data.  These "data lockers" are assigned to hold the following types of data:

  • Email,

  • Files, and

  • Student web pages.

The amount of space that you have in these "data lockers" is called a quota.

Personal Profiles

You also have storage space assigned for your roaming profile, or personal profile.  Your personal profile records any changes you make to your computer's settings.

  • Do you have a special background picture you want to always see when working in our labs?

  • What about easy access to your favorite web pages that you've bookmarked while using the labs?

The personal profile remembers what changes you've made to your settings so that whenever you use any computer in an IS-managed lab your computer looks and acts the same.

Personal profile data also takes up space on the server, but this data is somewhat different than what you keep in your "data lockers."

The quota for personal profile space is 15 MB

Email Storage Space

One of your "data lockers" is assigned to hold your email.  All official UMKC email will be sent to your Exchange email address.

Your Exchange email address is:

<your username>@umkc.edu

The quota for email storage space is 20 MB.

For more information, please refer to the following web pages:

File Storage Space

Every student with an activated Exchange account has space on the Exchange server for personal file storage.  You can save your projects, documents, and other files to this file storage space.

Personal Data Storage Space Quota is limited to 100MB.

Student Web Pages

Students are given web site storage and web addresses.  These web sites can be used either for personal use or for classes.  IS does not support web page creation, but your professors should be able to provide you with guidance on class assignments.

Information about student web sites is available at:

The following web pages offer all the information IS-managed labs can give you regarding personal student web pages:

IS-managed Computer Labs

Information Services manages some but not all of the computer labs on campus.  Please refer to the IS-managed computer labs page for locations of these labs.  Student Assistants are available in IS-managed general student use labs.  They are wearing badges and sitting at stations with a sign on the monitor.  The following guidelines will help you use IS-managed labs.
